LEISURE LETER 3: PHOTOGRAPHER BRANDON McMAHON

PHOTOGRAPHER, MUSIC JUNKY, AND CURATOR OF IDYLLIC IMAGERY, WE RECENTLY CAUGHT UP WITH BRANDON McMAHON FOR A SHORT Q & A.
_

Dandy Del Mar- So, where are you from?

Brendan McMahon- Phoenix, Arizona

DDM- How’d you get into photography ?

BM- My stepdad, Jim, had always been into photography. Utilizing a large swath of various cameras and film types. Documenting my childhood, I thought it only natural to take it up about 10 years ago. I shot film when I lived in the Caribbean and in San Francisco heavily in 2008-2009, and have been pretty much ever since. Fell in love with the textured nature of film, and depth -  especially with how easy snapping photos is in today’s world. The end product is much more tangible when there is such an intricate process involved.

DDM- What’s your favorite thing to photograph?

BM- Tough, I’d say capturing human expression and travel. Candid and timeless moments that, when you look back after a few years, can remember little details because of things and emotions captured in the photo.

DDM- What/who have you been listening to lately?

BM- All over the place really – pretty much have played the new Mapache album daily. Also have been playing a lot of Peter Ivers, Paul Virgilio, Chaseiro, and Ahmed Malek around the house.

DDM- How do you spend your leisurely time?

BM- Travel - I tend to go to Mexico frequently, being so close. Ideally, beachside with some Mezcal. A lot of photographable moments have come from there.

DDM- What projects are you working on or do you have coming up?

BM- Plugging along on some playlists for the Acid Memories show on NTS Radio, as well as some with my friend David over at New Commute. Also working on a few design/art-oriented things with the talented John Zabawa. A little hush-hush at the moment, but will be really cool. As far as photography, just will continue to constantly travel and shoot. Never have a real set plan, feel the best photographs just happen.
